DDA & Accessible Units
You may say:
"None of our customers or colleagues use a wheelchair or need a disabled toilet."
The Law says:
"Tough! They must be available - and accessible."
To quote from the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995:
People with disabilities have important rights of access to everyday services - including:
- local councils
- doctors' surgeries
- shops
- hotels
- banks
- pubs
- post offices
- theatres
- hairdressers
- places of worship
- courts
- the list goes on...
The following rules and dire warnings about what will happen if you don't provide fully accessible facilities - extracted from a far longer document - were not written by us, or any other business with a commercial interest in Health and Safety
They have come down from no less an authority than HM Government
Consider yourself well and truly warned
Your access ramps must not be slippery, there are regulations on the angle of the ramps, on where you must install hand rails etc; the list is endless and when you fail to comply you can be heavily fined.
However, accessible services aren't just about installing ramps and widening doorways for wheelchair users. It's about making services easier to use for all people with disabilities, including those who are blind, deaf or have a learning disability.
Get it wrong and you face a fine - which could pale into insignificance if you face a Personal Injury claim
That could run into seven or even eight figures. It could spell the end of your business -which would be a cruel irony since, no doubt, you agree with us 100% about the rights of the disabled.
In the real world, of course, there can be plenty of problems - especially if your premises are restricted, awkwardly shaped... or simply very old - which applies to some of the most picturesque venues in the UK.
